Manual Transmissions, NATEF Standards Job Sheets Third Edition by Jack Erjavec

Preface:
The automotive service industry continues to change with the technological changes made by automobile and tool and equipment manufacturers. Today’s automotive technician must have a thorough knowledge of automotive systems and components, good computer skills, exceptional communication skills, good reasoning, the ability to read and follow instructions, and above average mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity.

This new edition, like the last, was designed to give students a chance to develop the same skills and gain the same knowledge that today’s successful technician has. This edition also reflects the changes in the guidelines established by the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF), as of January 2008. The purpose of NATEF is to evaluate technician training programs against standards developed by the automotive industry and recommend qualifying programs for certification (accreditation) by ASE (National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence).

Programs can earn ASE certification upon the recommendation of NATEF. NATEF’s national standards reflect the skills that students must master. ASE certification through NATEF evaluation ensures that certified training programs meet or exceed industry-recognized, uniform standards of excellence. At the expense of much time and many minds, NATEF has assembled a list of basic tasks for each of their certification areas. These tasks identify the basic skills and knowledge levels that competent technicians have. The tasks also identify what is required for a student to start a successful career as a technician. Most of the content in this book are job sheets. These job sheets relate to the tasks specified by NATEF. The main considerations during the creation of these job sheets were student learning and program certification by NATEF.

Students are guided through standard industry accepted procedures. While they are progressing, they are asked to report their findings as well as offer their thoughts on the steps they have just completed. The questions asked of the students are thought provoking and require students to apply what they know to what they observe. The job sheets were also designed to be generic. That is, whenever possible, the tasks can be performed on any vehicle from any manufacturer. Also, completion of the sheets does not require the use of specific brands of tools and equipment; rather students use what is available. In addition, the job sheets can be used as a supplement to any good textbook. Also included are description and basic use of the tools and equipment listed in NATEF’s standards. The standards recognize that not all programs have the same needs, nor do all programs teach all of the NATEF tasks. Therefore, the basic philosophy for the tools and equipment requirement is that the training should be as thorough as possible with the tools and equipment necessary for those tasks.

Theory instruction and hands-on experience of the basic tasks provide initial training for employment in automotive service or further training in any or all of the specialty areas. Competency in the tasks indicates to employers that you are skilled in that area. You need to know the appropriate theory, safety, and support information for each required task. This should include identification and use of the required tools and testing and measurement equipment required for the tasks, the use of current reference and training materials, the proper way to write work orders and warranty reports, and the storage, handling, and use of Hazardous Materials as required by the ‘Right to Know Law’, and federal, state, and local governments. Words to the Instructor: I suggest you grade these job sheets based on completion and reasoning. Make sure the students answer all questions. Then look at their reasoning to see if the task was actually completed and to get a feel for their understanding of the topic.

It will be easy for students to copy others’ measurements and findings, but each student should have their own base of understanding and that will be reflected in their explanations. Words to the Student: While completing the job sheets, you have a chance to develop the skills you need to be successful. When asked for your thoughts or opinions, think about what you observed. Think about what could have caused those results or conditions. You are not being asked to give accurate explanations for everything you do or observe. You are only asked to think. Thinking leads to understanding. Good technicians are good because they have a basic understanding of what they are doing and of why they are doing it. Jack Erjavec
