Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is a well-known remote sensing technique, but conventional single-antenna SAR is inherently limited by the minimum antenna area constraint. This book deals with multi-antenna SAR in microwave remote sensing applications, such as high-resolution imaging, wide-swath remote sensing and ground moving target indication (GMTI). Particular attention is paid to the signal processing aspects of various multi-antenna SAR from a top-level system description.

Multi-antenna SAR allows for simultaneous transmission and reception by multiple antennas, compared to conventional SARs with only a single antenna. This provides a potential to gather additional information and to benefit from this information to overcome the restrictions of conventional single-antenna SARs. Multiple antennas can be placed either in a monostatic platform or distributed platforms. The simplest multi-antenna SAR is bistatic SAR which can be extended to multistatic SAR by having more than two transmitters or receivers. Many different terms for multi-antenna SAR are used in literature.

These include multistatic SAR, multi-antenna SAR, netted SAR, multisite SAR and distributed SAR. In this book, we use the term multi-antenna SAR as a “catch-all” to embrace all possible forms.

This book is a research monograph. Its backbone is a series of innovative microwave remote sensing approaches that we have developed in recent years. These approaches address different specific problems of future microwave remote sensing, yet the topics discussed are all centered around multi-antenna SAR imaging. By stitching these approaches together in a book, we are able to tell a detailed story on various aspects of multi-antenna SAR imaging within a consistent framework.

The subject of this book falls into the field of electrical engineering, more specifically, into the area of radar signal processing. The main targeted readers are researchers as well as practitioners in industry who are interested in microwave remote sensing, SAR imaging and radar signal processing. 

We have made a significant effort to present the materials in a rigorous and selfcontained way, so that interested readers can learn the multi-antenna SAR framework thoroughly. Besides newly developed approaches, a considerable portion of the book presents tutorial-like materials; for example, in Chapter 2 we review the necessary concepts in a gradual and motivated manner. Little background knowledge is required beyond a basic understanding of signal and system theorem. Therefore this book can also serve as an introduction to SAR imaging.

Following Chapters 1 and 2, which contain the introduction and background material, the other chapters are structured into five parts. Chapters 3 and 4 are devoted to single-input multiple-output (SIMO) multi-antenna SAR imaging. The heart is to achieve high-resolution wide-swath remote sensing for azimuth multi-antenna SAR and elevation multi-antenna SAR. Chapters 5 to 7 deal with multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) SAR waveform diversity, high-resolution wide-swath remote sensing and GMTI. Chapters 8 and 9 study time, phase and spatial synchronization for distributed multi-antenna SAR systems. Chapter 10 discusses azimuth-variant distributed SAR imaging algorithms. Finally, Chapter 11 introduces the multi-antenna SAR for three-dimensional imaging, where the frequency diverse array (FDA) is also introduced. Additional
