Chemistry, 8th Edition by Steven S. Zumdah, Susan A. Zumdahl

CHEMISTRY allows the reader to learn chemistry basics quickly and easily by emphasizing a thoughtful approach built on problem solving. For the Eighth Edition, authors Steven and Susan Zumdahl have extended this approach by emphasizing problem-solving strategies within the Examples and throughout the text narrative. CHEMISTRY speaks directly to the reader about how to approach and solve chemical problems--to learn to think like a chemist--so that they can apply the process of problem-solving to all aspects of their lives.

 what’s new in this edition:
⏩We added Problem-Solving Strategy boxes to focus students’ attention on the very important process of problem solving. One of the main goals of general chemistry is to help students become creative problem solvers.

We added Concept Summary boxes to help students organize their thinking about the crucial chemical concepts that they encounter.

In “Chapter 3: Stoichiometry,” we added a new section, “Learning to Solve Problems,” which emphasizes the importance of problem solving. This new section will help students understand that thinking their way through a problem produces more long term, meaningful learning rather than simply memorizing steps, which are soon forgotten.

In Chapters 3–6, we have introduced a series of questions into the in-chapter Examples to engage students in the process of problem solving. This more active approach helps students think their way through the solution to the problem. After Chapters 3–6, we shift this responsibility back to students, who have by then gained the critical-thinking skills required to solve problems that are more complex.

“Chapter 4: Types of Chemical Reactions and Solution Stoichiometry,” now gives a more qualitative and intuitive method for balancing oxidation–reduction equations, which is based on oxidation states. The “half-reaction method for balancing oxidation–reduction reactions” was moved to “Chapter 18: Electrochemistry.” We felt that it makes more sense to cover the more complicated equations later in the text.

“Chapter 15: Applications of Aqueous Equilibria” was a long chapter, which dealt with difficult material. In order to make this chapter more manageable for students, we have split this chapter in two: “Chapter 15: Acid–Base Equilibrium” and “Chapter 16: Solubility and Complex Ion Equilibrium.”

We have combined two chapters: “The Representative Elements: Groups 1A through 4A” and “The Representative Elements: Groups 5A through 8A,” into one chapter to provide a more focused and usable treatment of descriptive chemistry.

We have revised almost every figure in the textbook to better serve visual learners. Most of the glassware, orbitals, graphs, flowcharts, and molecules have been redrawn.

We have added more macro/micro illustrations to help students understand the connection between the world we see and the world of atoms and molecules.

We’ve add a new problem type to the end-of-chapter problems called Connecting to Biochemistry. These problems highlight organic and biological applications. This feature allows instructors to quickly locate material that will be of particular interest to students in pre- edicine, biology, and other health-related fields.
